    Abstract

The West has always comprised of multiple nations, thus leading to the existence of multiple national cultures. In time, a unified identity of European/Western civilisation emerged among these same peoples. However, persuading thes multi-faceted cultures and nationalities of the West to co-exist as one people was only achievable as of 1648 through the Peace of Westphalia, as an end result of the fear caused by the Thirty Years’ and the Eighty Years’ Wars. Secondly, is that the emergence of a unified European identity is, in other words, the emergence of the values of Western civilisation. While the first aspect, that of the founding of national cultures, was affected by the influence of the “the other” within their own circle, the second aspect was crucially affected by “the other” influences outside of Europe. Similar to how Roman law compirised the backbone of Western identity, so too had the other/enemy been determined to be Turks/Muslims. With the Ottoman-German Alliance during WWI beginning the process of co-operated with Muslims from outside the Europe, this defined enmity had been relaxed to a certain degree. After WWII, this relaxation went even further; Turning to Muslim co-coperation in the fight against the Republics of the Sivet Union, this had even paved the way for the view that Muslims residing in the West. Unfortunately, this situation faded once the collapse of the sharply ressurrected the old ideals of Western Identity; when the Communist Russia fell down, Muslims began to be viewed, once again, as enemies. This reversion later bred the new and globalized form of Islamophobia that exists today.
